RSPCA Good Business Awards 2007 Make An Impression For Animal Welfare

Independent panels of distinguished industry experts judge the awards' entries, with each panel meeting twice to decide the nominees and overall winners.

 
GERARD DUVÉ, MSc
A respected chemist with more than 25 years' research and development experience in major companies worldwide.

When head of technical services at Superdrug plc, Gerard established its non-animal testing policy, and lectured on the importance of eliminating animal pain and distress in research techniques - the three Rs concept (replace, reduce, refine). Gerard currently runs a freelance consultancy and is secretary to the trustees for the Fund for the Replacement of Animals in Medical Experiments (FRAME).
JO FAIRLEY
A high-profile journalist and author with an interest in beauty, health and organic living.

Jo currently works as contributing editor on the Mail on Sunday's YOU magazine, and beauty editor on Sainsbury's magazine, Wedding Day and Aga magazine. She has written 12 books including co-authoring the best selling Beauty Bible series, and was founding partner of Green & Black's Organic Chocolate.
 
ANDREW OPIE
Director of food and consumer policy at the British Retail Consortium (BRC) and a qualified rural surveyor.

Andrew lobbies the government, the Food Standards Agency and other stakeholders on behalf of retailers - on issues including food safety, supplier relationships, and health and nutrition. He joined the BRC in 2005 after eight years as head of policy services with the National Farmers' Union, and is also a member of the Organic Action Plan Group.
RICHARD JOHNSON
An award-winning journalist and broadcaster.

Richard presents Full on Food - the peak-time food programme - for BBC2, and has written and presented radio documentaries about everything from soap opera to exorcism. His journalism appears regularly in the Sunday Times and the Sunday Telegraph, and he has a weekly column in the Guardian.
DR GEOFF SPRIEGEL
A consultant to the food industry with many years of technical experience within food manufacture and retail.

As technical director of Sainsbury's, Geoff had technical management responsibility of 16,000 own brand lines, covering food safety and other food-related issues, including animal welfare. Previous industry positions include Corporate Director of the Ethical Trading Initiative and Retail Director for Assured Farm Standards
AJF (JOHN) WEBSTER, MA Vet, MB, PhD, MRCVS
Professor Emeritus at the University of Bristol where he established a unit for the study of animal behaviour and welfare.

John was a founder member of the Farm Animal Welfare Council and first propounded the 'Five Freedoms' which define the elements of good welfare in domestic animals. He is a former president of the Nutrition Society and the British Society for Animal Science. John is the author of Animal Welfare: A Cool Eye towards Eden and its successor Animal Welfare: Limping towards Eden.
 
LISA ARMSTRONG
A fashion authority with more than 25 years in the field, including eight years as fashion features director at Vogue.

Lisa is currently fashion editor of The Times. She has written for many national British newspapers, contributes to Harper's Bazaar in the USA and is a contributing editor on British Vogue. She has also written several novels.
WAYNE HEMINGWAY
An acclaimed, business-savvy fashion designer who has diversified into designing housing developments, technology and product design.

Wayne co-founded the fashion label Red or Dead, winning the prestigious British Fashion Council's 'Street Style Designer of the Year' award three times in a row. After selling the company in a multi-million pound cash sale, he set up Hemingway Design to specialise in affordable and social design - it is now one of the leading house-design practices in the UK.
PAUL SMITH
Director of retail services at the British Retail Consortium (BRC) since 2004.

Paul represents the retail view on programmes such as Chip and PIN and the proof of age scheme for young people, as well as a number of initiatives with the Office of Fair Trading. He has had a varied and expansive retail career spending time in store management, human relations and corporate affairs. He also managed the euro programme for Marks & Spencer.
