The Awards are open to all companies in the UK in the Cosmetics, Fashion and Food industries that show innovation and excellence in advancing animal welfare. For companies large and small the Awards acknowledge and promote those that go the extra mile to include animal welfare as part of their ethical business policy.
The awards command significant national and regional press coverage and we work in conjunction with media partners for each industry – SPC magazine in cosmetics, Drapers in fashion and caterersearch.com in the food industry.
Businesses, large and small, across the country, have put the welfare of animals at the heart of their business and these awards recognise their inspiring and commendable achievements. The winners were announced on 7th October at an elegant evening reception in London at One Marylebone NW1.
The fifth year of the RSPCA Good Business Awards has been an exciting one with some significant changes. 2009 saw a successful outcome for our long running campaign to achieve a ban on animal testing. In March it became illegal to sell or import into the EU any cosmetics ingredients or products tested on animals*. This means this will be the last time the Cosmetics category will feature in the awards and so in recognition of this important milestone The Body Shop was presented with the Lifetime Achievement Award for making the greatest contribution to achieving this ban.
In the Fashion industry we have seen a growth in the number of high street names entering the Awards. The winner of the large company award was George at Asda which has made tremendous steps in a relatively short time to address the most important areas across its business to raise standards of animal welfare.
In the Food category we introduced a new award to recognise the contribution made by pubs to source food locally and keep their customers informed. The Duke of Cambridge were worthy winners.
For the first time this year we were delighted to work with The Independent and talk to consumers directly by asking them to vote for their favourite supermarket in the RSPCA People’s Choice Supermarket Award.
With over 11,500 votes cast in total the public voted overwhelmingly for the Co-operative, a retailer that has long history on the high street and has always considered ethics and animal welfare at its core.
(* with the exception of a small number of specific types of tests which have an extended deadline of March 2013.)
