Food industry awards

With around 40 million cattle, calves, sheep, pigs and nearly 900 million poultry used in UK food production every year, animal welfare is a big issue.

The RSPCA Good Business Awards recognise the food industry’s best restaurants, pubs, supermarkets and catering. Food is big business and having the best food even bigger. These food awards judge UK businesses – big and small – that go the extra mile for animal welfare and help tackle issues including: standards of animal care on farms; live transport and slaughter; import of meat and eggs and clearer labelling of produce – including information about the production method.

Edge and Son, based in the Wirral (2009 food retailer award winner) have been specialist butchers since 1844. Current owner Callum Edge is just as passionate about quality meat as he is about higher animal welfare:

"Great tasting meat is the result of many things. The best breeds, a natural and stress-free life (and death), good butchery and hanging, not forgetting the preparation and cooking."

People's choice supermarket

In association with The Independent

After the success of last year’s first 'People’s Choice Supermarket' award, won by The Co-operative, we are proud to be partnering once again with national daily newspaper The Independent, to give the public the chance to vote for their favourite animal-friendly supermarket.

This year we are particularly interested to know how you have promoted higher animal welfare products to consumers to increase sales of these goods. Find out more by visiting our People's Choice page.
